This will be a dumping ground for whatever self-indulgent nonsense that I can come up with. From video game, anime and online video commentaries, to personal musings about cars, relationships, work and life, if you didn't ask, you'll find it here!
More than anything, this webpage will be a space for me to get some of my thoughts out of my head. I started abandoning my main social media accounts at the beginning of the decade, closing those account earlier this year. While I have moved on from FB/Insta/Twitter, I still have thoughts and opinions to toss out there. This site will be shared to a single-digit number of friends, so they can know what's going on in my weird little brain.
How did I end up here?
While my exodus from social media has been gradual, the decision to try neocities was spontaneous. As the work day ended on a Friday in June, I remembered a YouTube channel I really like, which maintains a silly little webpage for their own sake. Likewise, I wanted a little corner of the internet to call my own.
I have been on Reddit for several years, though my only real interest there now revolves around sports and technology subreddits. It is an easy forum for keeping up with my favorite team and its league, and Reddit has been instrumental in my journey into trying, learning, daily driving, and fully adopting Linux. [I use Debian and Fedora BTW] [This is being written on a jailbroken Chromebook running Debian!]
I also want to teach myself some new skills. Just going through the work of setting up this home page is giving me a better sense of what goes into basic webpage design. I like dabbling with new things, so I am embracing the opportunity to learn this stuff.
It is also an act of rebellion against the enshittification of every online space I have occupied the last ~15 years. It has been a real bummer to see a lot of my peers leaving those spaces, and for content mills and generative AI nonsense to fill the gaps. I am certain that most of my friends and family would not bother learing enough HTML or CSS to set up a neocities page, and that's totally fair! But for myself, I want to see what self-expression I can pursue through a silly old-school website like this.
So yeah. This is partially a personal blog and essay page, and partially a work of performance art by someone who is digitally touch-starved and wanting to find some space to share and engage with others.
It is probably a bit recursive, but I may chronicle this very journey to share my experience diving into this niche little corner of the Internet. We'll see.
